First World War Letters Home August 1915A friend is interned in Germany, Joffre not pleased, Vatican problems ...Junior Constitutional Club
Piccadilly London W1 30th August, 1915 Monday Night My Dear Mother … Jesse is in Switzerland & Marie semi interned in Germany, Heidelberg now I believe, they are very unpleasant to her Alice says; the husband is at Strasbourg. A. [Alison] says Matilda is terrified to say anything, naturally enough I suppose. She said to use Jesse H as post office & latter sent on her letters for a long time, but evidently Matilda never even wrote & thanked her, perhaps she could not, anyway since Jesse went to Rome &&& sends her letters another way, Dorothy Acton I believe. ???? & co are evidently installed in top story of Palazzo ???????. A says so far Italians have done very well in their fighting. No wounded in Rome yet I believe. She says it is wonderful how thay have got up their artillery. |
I believe Joffre is not at all pleased with French & his entourage, a good deal of talk about it in Paris; a very great & serious pity if this is so. Also Ian Hamilton seems not much if any use, they ought to give the younger men a chance, this war is utterly different to anything these older men are used to. I believe that Germany is furious at our sending a Minister to the Vatican & that is partly why they are so nasty to Marie, having found out her father was S. Envoy to Vatican. Apparently unless Jesse is in Switzerland they do not hear from the interned one … Camporeale [?] is violently pro-German & is much disliked & avoided in Rome as a consequence. He ought to be shut up … Best love Yr Affect son A
